Performance Info

A clandestine game played by the two maids reflected Madame’s distorted mirror.

Jean Genet based his 1947 play The Maids (Les Bonnes) on the sensational account of two maids, sisters, who brutally murder their mistress and her daughter. This new production combines video projection and innovative sound design with the unique physicality that has brought international recognition and acclaim to the Sadari Movement Laboratory SML reinterprets the play as physical and object-based theatre, using a large wooden wardrobe to define both tangible and psychological space In SML’s retelling, the two sisters, Solange and Claire, both envy and hate Madame, their mistress. They dress and act like her, falling into a fantasy in which they become her. The definition of ego and other, and the mixing of love and loathing that help define human nature are explored through the dualities of reality/fiction, inside/outside and subject/object. The wardrobe becomes the shared psychological space of the maids and their mistress, a space that ultimately does not change even when Madame is not there. The outrageous costumes and physical theatricality of this new production are a visual treat, pulling us into the claustrophobic world of Solange, Claire and Madame. The project is an international collaboration between the SML creative team, sound designer Matthias Eiran from Austria and Robin Bargar, Insook Choi from the New York City College of Technology.

Director
Do-Wan IM
Artistic director, IM Do-Wan has been experimenting with kinetic theater in Korea since completing his studies at the L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris. He founded the Sadari Movement Laboratory in 1998 to unite the collaborative energies of a troupe committed to creative processes.
All members are trained in the Jacques Lecoq method as well as traditional Korean dance to maximize SML’s repertory. They are fully engaged in producing each theatrical experience – from analysis and translation of the text to bringing it to life through kinetic images and versatile, economic movements.
Stepping beyond dialogue and realist conventions, the company believes actors can express the social and psychological state of their characters more poignantly by utilizing separate spaces and dynamic rhythms that stress physical capabilities and characteristics.
In LesAveugle,Typist, Spectrum2001,TheCherry Orchard, Between Two Gates, Woyzeck, Human Comedy, and all its productions, SML experiments with physical movement, objects, sound and light to create a space full of imagination that draws in audiences from every culture.
AsisNow is a production company founded in 2005 to creatively develop, produce and present innovative and exciting Asian contemporary physical theatre, dance and interdisciplinary arts. The company is also strongly involved in creative development, consultation and performing arts management.
